Evides NV provides water service to 2.5 million customers. They strive to make their operations as sustainable and connected to the environment as possible, though their previous operations produced a significant carbon footprint. They wanted to reduce their emissions by optimizing their pumping stations’ operations and lowering their fuel requirements. However, determining the best way to automatically operate the on/off switches became a significant challenge that their previously used software could not overcome.
Evides NV learned that they could improve control of their pumping stations by using OpenFlows WaterGEMS. They performed detailed hydraulic modeling and analysis in a cloud environment, which sped up computation efforts. They then created dynamic control scripting based on their findings and incorporated the script into their existing process automation software. The pumping stations now use 33% less energy, resulting in a carbon reduction of 942,000 kilograms per year, without impacting water pressure or water quality for customers.
