As part of renovation at a university hospital, a refrigeration machine would be removed from a basement to make room for a new heating system. The project required a site survey, presenting data capture challenges on a short timeline. DAI-DAN wanted to perform a 3D recording of the existing basement area and equipment but found that large 3D laser scanners lacked the portability and mobility to work in the narrow space.
DAI-DAN determined that omnidirectional cameras, combined with ContextCapture to process the captured video files, would shorten the survey time from 12 hours to two hours. Using the 3D reality model to calculate the potential for equipment removal, they avoided the disassembly of a concrete wall, reducing associated construction costs by 20% and CO2 emissions by 972 kilograms, resulting in a 434% return on investment. They plan to use 3D digitalization to enable intelligent construction and lifecycle building operations.
