A project in South Korea’s Ulsan region involved the reverse engineering of a plant to assess its construction quality. The client previously used laser scanning and conventional software to generate and process point clouds, but the point cloud data was too large for the program to handle, slowing the project’s progression. The project team at Prime Tech realized that they needed interoperable 3D reality modeling technology to generate a digital twin of the plant.
They selected ContextCapture and OpenPlant to create the 3D model and perform reverse engineering. Using the digital twin, Prime Tech discovered discrepancies between the design data and the actual data that could have led to potentially dangerous situations and costly rework during construction, reducing costs by 30%. Performing repeated virtual simulations provided a better visual understanding of the potential dangers, preventing safety incidents during dismantling and construction.
