National Highways is tasked with designing, building, operating, and maintaining the strategic road network in England. Recently, they needed to increase lane capacity as part of the Smart Motorways Initiative, which will deliver GBP 4.5 billion to 7 billion of road improvements over the next 10 years. However, to complete this complex project, the team required managing information to improve productivity and quality and reduce safety risks, costs, and time.

After considering their options, National Highways chose BCDE to create its Business Information Framework (BIF). It allowed the team to make sense of the data within their systems using an intuitive interface, as well as share the information among disciplines and stakeholders. Making the data more accessible improved efficiency and data reliability while also reducing road disruptions, design hours, and repeating tasks. The team estimates GBP 70 million savings by providing open access and re-use of data assets for better decision-making and construction efficiency.
